In January 26, 2001, the western Indian state of Gujarat was hit by a severe earthquake of magnitude 7.9. Concentrating on the elderly, HelpAge India carried out one of its largest operations, the highlights of which are as follows:

 

As immediate relief, 1 lakh potable water pouches and pre-cooked food packets were distributed.

Homes were built for 1575 families in 7 blocks. 1575 more provided livelihood support through traditional income generation activity.

In the rehabilitation phase, 800 more cyclone and quake resistant homes were built, and additional 800 families were provided livelihood support.

Food for 30 days was provided for 10,500 families.
3000 blankets & 5000 tents were given to families with older members. Other essentials like torches and utensils were also given.
7 of HelpAge India’s MMUs provided round-the–clock medical aid from the day after the quake. Two units also provided artificial limbs. Over 130 emergency surgeries were carried out.
Medicines worth Rs. 50 lakh were dispensed.
