On a regular bustling morning at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education And Research (JIPMER), Puducherry, Mr. Rajendiran, 74, arrived with a quiet determination that would soon move our team beyond words.
Widowed, with no children and living in a small village in Tamil Nadu, he had been living with chronic pain for years. After visiting several medical colleges without relief and on advise from a friend, he took a decision that speaks volumes of both hardship and hope – he cycled for three days from Pudukkottai to Puducherry, saving every rupee he could.
At the hospital, HelpAge India‘s Help Desk team noticed him and from that moment on, he was no longer alone.
He was registered, guided to Geriatric Medicine, personally assisted through Orthopaedics and Dermatology consultations, helped collect his medicines, given a meal, a place to rest and safe accommodation for the night. When it was time to return home, a train ticket was arranged. When he shared his concern about his bicycle, the team made him a promise, it would find its way back to him.
True to their word, the bicycle was carefully couriered and delivered to his home a few days later. When Mr. Rajendiran called to confirm that he had reached safely, it marked not just the end of a journey, but the continuation of trust and care.
When our team asked him whether he would like to move into our Senior Care Home, Mr. Rajendiran confirmed that he did not wish to do so. He was gently advised, however, to take care of his health and to avoid such physically demanding travel in the future.
Stories like this remind us that elder care is not only about medical support – it is about dignity, respect and the reassurance that no one has to navigate life’s hardships without kindness walking alongside them.
