Research

India is often categorized as a young nation, but the rapid rise in life expectancy and the growing number of older persons (60+) have brought the challenges of ageing into sharp focus. While the National Policy on Older Persons was introduced as early as 1999, it is only recently that serious attention is being given to the implications of population ageing and its broader implications, especially in the field of social gerontology. As this demographic shift accelerates, there is an urgent need to understand and address the social, economic, and healthcare needs of India’s elderly population.
At HelpAge India, research lies at the core of our mission, helping us understand and address the needs of the elderly. With its intrinsic grassroot presence on-ground and strong institutional commitment towards the welfare of older persons, HelpAge India has played a key role in advancing research on ageing. The organization actively encourages both academics and practitioners to engage in scientific studies on elder issues, helping to build a robust knowledge base in the field. HelpAge India has also contributed to several multi-country research projects conducted by lead by multi-lateral organizations, bringing global perspectives to ageing challenges.
Since 2012, HelpAge India has been publishing an annual Pan-India Research Report focused on issues concerning older persons covering critical areas such as social care, elder abuse, inclusion & exclusion, perceptions, preparedness, gender dimensions and the impact of natural disasters on older persons. The findings serve as powerful tools for advocacy, policy-making, and program development.
In this section you will find a chronologically arranged list of our Research & Development Journals, Research Contributions and Research Reports, each offering unique insights into the lives and challenges of older persons in India.
