HelpAge India Marks ‘World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2025’
Launch of National Research Report and ‘Walk in My Shoes’ Campaign
Each year on the occasion of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, we release a pan-India research report. This year’s report will explore the ‘perceptions of both youth and older persons on ageing, intergenerational relations and dynamics.’ It will also focus on ‘how to foster stronger intergenerational bonds’ so both generations can live a more connected, fulfilling and happy life, creating an inclusive society for all age groups. The day is marked with on-ground events across more than 20 states in the country with Panel Discussions, report releases, signature campaigns, etc.
Our previous research reveals disturbing trends – 59% elders feel that elder abuse is prevalent in society, with disrespect and neglect as the top two forms of abuse and family members being the prime perpetrators. Around 79% of the elders feel that their family does not spend enough time with them. Close to 20% think that their family ‘does not want to’ spend time withthem, especially the younger generation.
Perceptions are a large part of this narrative, how elderly are viewed or judged in society. Our campaign this year titled #WalkInMyShoes or #MeriNazarSeDekho, aims to drive awareness and strengthen engagement between the young and the elderly and combat the social isolation many elders face.
Let’s take some time out, to listen to what the younger and older generations feel about each other and help bring ‘Generations Together’ to create an inclusive and caring society for all.
