HelpAge India Marks ‘World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2026’
Launch of National Research Report on ‘Climate Resilient Ageing - Ensuring Care, Dignity & Agency’
As climate change intensifies, older persons are among those most affected by its impacts. Yet their experiences, needs and contributions often remain overlooked.
This World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, HelpAge India is highlighting the intersection of ageing, poverty and climate risk through a multi-state research study focused on older persons living in climate-vulnerable rural communities.
The study seeks to understand how climate-related challenges affect the lives of older persons and what can be done to ensure they are able to live with care, dignity and agency.
ABOUT THE STUDY
Across India, floods, droughts, heatwaves, landslides and other climate-related events are becoming more frequent and severe.
For older persons, these challenges can affect health, livelihoods, housing, social support systems and access to essential services.
Through this research, HelpAge India aims to better understand the realities faced by older persons in disaster-prone rural areas and identify ways to strengthen resilience and wellbeing in later life.
WHY THIS RESEARCH MATTERS
Older persons are often among the most affected during climate-related emergencies, yet their needs are rarely addressed within disaster management and climate adaptation planning.
The findings will contribute to a stronger understanding of how climate change affects ageing populations and help inform policies, programmes and community-based responses that are more inclusive of older persons.
FROM EVIDENCE TO ACTION
The findings will support:
- Policy recommendations for more age-inclusive disaster and climate planning
- Stronger community-based resilience models
- Improved understanding of the care and support needs of older persons
- Advocacy for the inclusion of older persons in climate and disaster response frameworks
