For 80-year-old Nani Gopal Das, the HelpAge India Mobile Healthcare Unit (MHU) in Belghoria, North Kolkata, has been more than a medical service—it has been a lifeline. For over two decades, he has visited the MHU regularly to manage hypertension and osteoarthritis, all while caring for his wife, whose vision has been almost completely lost to diabetic retinopathy.
With no support from their only son and no one else to rely on, Nani has taken on the role of his wife’s sole caregiver with unwavering devotion. Her deteriorating eyesight has left her fully homebound, and the fear that he might fall ill—and leave her without care—has weighed on him for years.
The MHU has helped shoulder that burden. Regular treatment and health awareness sessions have enabled Nani to manage his own conditions more effectively, ensuring he remains strong enough to care for his wife. As her mobility declined, the MHU team began visiting her at home, providing essential check-ups and continued treatment to help stabilise her condition.
For Nani and his wife, the Mobile Healthcare Unit is not just a clinic on wheels—it is the dependable support system they never had, bringing healthcare, reassurance, and dignity right to their doorstep.
